How do I know if I am due a PAYE tax refund?

Compare the Income Tax and USC deducted from your pay with your final liability after credits and reliefs. Revenue’s Statement of Liability, requested through Review your tax in myAccount, gives the official result. Flint’s free estimator does the same comparison for single, Irish-resident PAYE employees under 65.

How far back can I claim a tax refund?

You can generally claim for any of the previous four tax years.

A refund claim for 2022 must reach Revenue by 31 December 2026.

A refund claim for 2023 must reach Revenue by 31 December 2027.

A refund claim for 2024 must reach Revenue by 31 December 2028.

A refund claim for 2025 must reach Revenue by 31 December 2029.

Is an estimate a guaranteed refund?

No. An estimate depends on complete, accurate figures and on your eligibility. A review can also show an underpayment. Revenue determines your final tax position.

How much is the Rent Tax Credit?

For 2024 to 2026 the Rent Tax Credit is 20% of qualifying rent, up to €1,000 per person or double that for a jointly assessed couple. For 2022 and 2023 the maximum was €500 per person. It reduces Income Tax only, not USC or PRSI.

How much tax relief can I get on medical expenses?

Most qualifying health expenses get 20% relief on the amount you paid after reimbursements. Non-routine dental treatment can qualify; routine dental care does not. Nursing-home costs can get relief at up to 40%.

Can I claim tax relief for working from home?

If your remote-working arrangements qualify, apportion your share of eligible annual utility and broadband costs by qualifying remote days and days in the tax year. Subtract employer remote-working payments, then take 30%. The tax saving depends on your Income Tax rate.

Do I pay USC on all my income?

If your total income is €13,000 or less for the year, you pay no USC. Above that, USC applies across income chargeable to USC. Exempt income, such as qualifying social welfare payments, stays exempt. For 2025 the standard rates are 0.5% on the first €12,012, 2% on the next €15,370, 3% on the next €42,662, 8% on income above €70,044.

Does Flint need my Revenue password?

No. Never share your myAccount or ROS password, ROS certificate or banking credentials with anyone. An authorised tax agent uses their own Revenue access through Revenue’s agent-linking process.

Is Flint part of Revenue?

No. Flint is an independent service and is not affiliated with the Office of the Revenue Commissioners.

Does Flint file my tax return?

Flint helps you understand your tax and prepare the information you need. PAYE workers claim through Revenue’s myAccount, and self-assessed taxpayers file a Form 11 through ROS. Any service where an authorised agent files for you will be agreed separately, in writing.

Who can use Flint?

Flint is an online service for people across Ireland. The free estimator covers single, Irish-resident PAYE employees under 65 with standard USC. Our guides cover a wider range of credits and reliefs.

What does Flint cost?

The estimator and guides are free. If you choose a paid service, you will see the price before you pay. Any tax refund is paid to you by Revenue and is separate from Flint’s fees.

Is my information saved when I use the estimator?

No. The estimator calculates in your browser tab, and the figures you type are not sent to Flint or saved.
